The attached video demonstrates one of the techniques developed to obtain intraoperative samples from the wall of the lateral ventricle in children undergoing surgery for intractable epilepsy.
The first slide is a screen shot from the stealth guidance system which precisely localises where the sample is taken from
The second slide is taken from the operating microscope and shows the surgical tract down into the ventricle which is labelled. The video then shows how a sample of the wall is removed for analysis.
The final slide demonstrates the quality of the tissue obtained
In collaboration with Dr Alison Beckett - Biomedical Electron Microscopy Manager at the University of Liverpool and Ms Sarah Tetlow Cambridge Medical Student we are pioneering the use of next generation techniques to produce 3D images from the wall of the lateral ventricle

In collaboration with Prof Paul McNamara and Dr Francesca Sposito Postdoctoral Research Associate, University of Liverpool, we have been culturing samples taken from the wall of the lateral ventricle to produce a confluent culture of ciliated human ependymal cells
